Château de Chambord
Deep inside Europe's largest walled hunting ground, Château de Chambord is the grandest castle in the Loire Valley and one of the defining works of French Renaissance architecture. Construction began in 1519 on the orders of Francis I, flushed with victory at the Battle of Marignano — a monument to royal glory that took twenty-eight years to complete. In thirty-two years on the throne, Francis spent just forty-two days here, yet he treated it as his stage for displaying wealth and power: in 1539 he received his great rival, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, within these walls. Behind a façade stretching 156 metres lie 426 rooms, 77 staircases, and 282 chimneys. Every door opens onto a story the crowds have walked past without stopping to hear.

Double Helix Staircase
Look up from the central stairwell and you see the trick: two flights of steps wind around the same axis in a double helix. Two people climbing on separate spirals can glimpse each other through the openings — yet they will never meet on the stairs. This double-spiral staircase at the castle's very heart is very likely the work of Leonardo da Vinci, or at least inspired by his drawings — its coiling form echoes the intertwined trunks of the medieval Tree of Life.
Bourbon Room
The Bourbon Room on the ground floor displays portraits and busts of the seven Bourbon monarchs who ruled France from 1589 to 1830. Most of the works came from the collection of Henri, Count of Chambord (1820–1883), the last heir of the elder Bourbon line: during his years in exile he acquired large numbers of copies through a Parisian art dealer, many of them after paintings and sculptures in the Louvre and other national collections, turning the castle into a museum of dynastic memory. The room itself began life as a sixteenth-century bedchamber, then served as a kitchen and a storeroom before being converted into its current reception-hall form in the 1970s.

Castle Chapel
The chapel sits on the second floor of the castle's west tower — not where you would expect it. Work began around 1546, just months before Francis I died in March of the following year. The king who built Chambord as a monument to himself barely lived to see his chapel take shape. From groundbreaking to completion, the small sanctuary took nearly one hundred and forty years.

Private Oratory in Francis I's Apartments
This small oratory is tucked into a corner of the royal apartments — a self-contained structure, completed around 1540, wedged between the outer wall of the king's tower and the gallery. Its existence creates an unexpected asymmetry on the castle's façade: the architect added this projecting volume so the king could pray in private. Inside there is no fireplace; the coffered vault overhead speaks the same language as Italian Renaissance churches, leaving no doubt about the room's sacred purpose.

Louis XIV Presents his Grandson as King of Spain
This painting by Roland (nineteenth century) has been in the castle's collection since 1850. It shows Louis XIV presenting his grandson Philip, Duke of Anjou — who would reign as Philip V of Spain — to the French court and to kneeling Spanish envoys. The actual event took place in the king's cabinet at Versailles, but the painting moves the scene to the top of the Queen's Staircase at Versailles. Henri, Count of Chambord, bought the painting in 1850 because Philip V had spent a night at Chambord in December 1700 while travelling to Madrid to take up the throne.
