Museum Island
Where the Spree splits around a narrow tongue of land at the heart of Berlin, five palatial museums stand shoulder to shoulder along the northern tip. This is Museum Island — built between 1830 and 1930 by five architects commissioned in succession by Prussian kings, and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The Old Museum, New Museum, Old National Gallery, Bode Museum, and Pergamon Museum each stand independently, yet the canals, bridges, and colonnaded courtyards between them weave the whole into one. Don't just pass through the entrance halls. The staircases, bridge railings, colonnade courtyards, and bronze figures scattered across the island each carry a story that most visitors walk past without stopping.

Great Granite Bowl in the Lustgarten
At the foot of the steps in front of the Old Museum, a low dark-red stone basin spreads across the plaza — 6.91 metres across and weighing about 75 tonnes, carved from a single block of granite. Its circumference works out to roughly 21.7 metres, earning it the tongue-in-cheek title "Wonder of the Biedermeier World," and it remains the largest stone basin made from a single piece of rock in the world. At various points in its history it was held up as a national symbol, called a "stone of veneration" and a "myth," and painted in multiple sketches and oils by the artist Hummel. What few people know is that it was never meant to be here at all.

Equestrian Statue of Frederick William IV
Walk up the open staircase of the Old National Gallery and the bronze rider above the entrance looks down at you: Frederick William IV, dressed in a fur-trimmed military coat, sits upright in the saddle with both hands on the reins, his head turned deliberately toward the Berlin Palace. Including the pedestal, the monument stands 9.60 metres tall; the figure alone is 5.20 metres. This is the king who founded Museum Island — and the gallery itself began with a sketch from his hand.

Lion Fighter (Equestrian)
Standing before the steps of the Old Museum, the left balustrade carries a bronze equestrian figure roughly 4.5 metres tall: a rider gripping a spear, braced against a lion rearing up to attack. This Lion Fighter is one of the signature works of the Berlin School of Sculpture, cast in a Realist style by Albert Wolff from a design sketch by the master sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch, and completed in 1861.

Amazon on Horseback
Climbing the steps of the Old Museum, the right balustrade presents a 3.70-metre bronze equestrian figure in profile: an Amazon warrior on horseback, spear levelled against a leopard lunging at her. The Amazon on Horseback was created in a Realist style by sculptor August Kiß, completed in 1841, and stands as one of the defining works of the Berlin School of Sculpture.
