Cathedral of La Laguna
Standing in the heart of La Laguna's UNESCO World Heritage old town, the cathedral's dome marks the highest point on the skyline. Its west façade is a 19th-century neoclassical composition in stone, modelled on the Cathedral of Pamplona; behind it, the body of the building is neo-Gothic — and notably, built in concrete, making it one of the earliest structures in Spain to use the material. The cathedral is dedicated to the city's patron, the Virgen de los Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies), and serves simultaneously as a cathedral, a parish church, and a Marian shrine. Alonso Fernández de Lugo, the conquistador who founded the city, is buried here. Step inside and three wide naves open before you, ringed by a gallery — resist the pull of the dome and look instead to the side altars and reliquaries, where the real detail hides.

Artworks and Treasures
Scattered among the altars and side chapels are the cathedral's finest pieces. The standout is a pulpit carved from Italian Carrara marble by the sculptor Pasquale Bocciardo — considered the most accomplished marble work in the Canary Islands. Alongside it is a fragment of the Mazuelos altarpiece. The interior also holds paintings by Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana, Luján Pérez, and Fernando Estévez. These details, spread across the nave, repay the kind of slow walk the soaring dome tends to discourage.
