West Gate of Carchemish
The West Gate formed part of the inner defensive ring of Carchemish, set into the western flank of a tell (ancient mound) that covers at least 86 acres. What you see today is a cross-section of the city wall: layers of rammed earth, Euphrates river gravel, and crushed limestone stacked in alternating bands. The cut face was exposed by chance in the 1990s when farmers extracted soil from the site, and it revealed a stretch of mudbrick masonry at least 14 meters long buried inside the outer slope — either an earlier building phase or a structural element of the wall's core. Iron Age II ceramics (717–605 BCE, during Assyrian rule) concentrate most densely here, pointing to reinforcement work after the Assyrians took control of the city.

South Gate of Carchemish
The South Gate, in excavation Area D, marks the boundary between the inner and outer city of Carchemish. Excavations by the Turkish-Italian joint team led by Nicolò Marchetti of the University of Bologna (ongoing since 2011) show that the gate complex consists of a monumental entrance, two broad-room antechambers (a hall type common in Near Eastern Bronze and Iron Age architecture), and a stone-paved passage running straight into the city's core. The stratigraphic sequence here spans Late Bronze Age I and Iron Age levels, confirming that the South Gate served as the city's main entry point across successive political regimes. Standing at the threshold, the broad-room floor plan makes legible how the gate designers balanced security with flow — an approach typical of urban planning across the ancient Near East.
