Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park sits in California's central Sierra Nevada, managed by the National Park Service across four counties and roughly 1,169 square miles (3,028 sq km). It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The park is renowned for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, and glacially sculpted terrain — nearly 95% of its land is designated wilderness. Around 10 million years ago the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and tilted, deepening the river canyons; roughly 1 million years ago glaciers advanced from the high country and carved those canyons into the U-shaped Yosemite Valley seen today. The park is also the birthplace of the national park concept itself — Lincoln's 1864 signing of the Yosemite Grant set the first precedent for public land preservation. About 4 million people visit each year, most spending their time in the seven square miles of the valley floor, but the corners that get walked past without a second look are the ones waiting for you to go deeper.
