Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park sits in California's central Sierra Nevada, managed by the National Park Service across four counties and roughly 1,169 square miles (3,028 sq km). It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The park is renowned for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, and glacially sculpted terrain — nearly 95% of its land is designated wilderness. Around 10 million years ago the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and tilted, deepening the river canyons; roughly 1 million years ago glaciers advanced from the high country and carved those canyons into the U-shaped Yosemite Valley seen today. The park is also the birthplace of the national park concept itself — Lincoln's 1864 signing of the Yosemite Grant set the first precedent for public land preservation. About 4 million people visit each year, most spending their time in the seven square miles of the valley floor, but the corners that get walked past without a second look are the ones waiting for you to go deeper.

Clouds Rest
Looking up from the valley floor, Clouds Rest isn't the tallest peak in the park — there are plenty of higher summits — but its proximity to the valley makes it loom with unusual presence. The ridge is razor-thin, a classic arête: when glaciers scoured either side, carving out Tenaya Canyon and Little Yosemite Valley, they left this narrow spine of rock between them. The northwest face is almost entirely solid granite, rising some 1,520 meters above Tenaya Creek.

Half Dome
From the valley floor, Half Dome looks like a sphere with one half cleanly sliced away — one face sheer vertical, the other three sides smooth and rounded, hence the name. But that impression is an illusion. It is a quartz monzonite pluton rising to over 2,600 m (8,800 ft), its core the remnant of a magma chamber that cooled slowly deep underground, then was exposed and partially stripped away by erosion. Seen from Washburn Point, it isn't half a dome at all — it reads as a slender northeast-to-southwest ridge.

Cathedral Rocks
Cathedral Rocks rise from the south wall of Yosemite Valley as three distinct summits — Lower, Middle, and Higher — with the tallest reaching about 2,025 m (6,644 ft). They face El Capitan across the valley, and the National Park Service has noted that "many people find these rocks more impressive than El Capitan."

Olmsted Point
Olmsted Point sits beside Tioga Pass Road with a south-facing view down Tenaya Canyon. From here you see Half Dome head-on from the north, Clouds Rest extending to the left, and the silver gleam of Tenaya Lake to the east. Glacial erratics — boulders carried from distant locations by the glacier and left where it melted — are scattered across the granite slope southwest of the parking area. A short walk south of the lot, about 200 meters through a patch of trees, brings you to the top of a small granite dome with the widest open view of Clouds Rest and Half Dome. The point is named for landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (father and son).

Tunnel View
The moment you emerge from the east portal of the Wawona Tunnel, daylight floods in and the valley opens up — that is when Tunnel View begins. This overlook on California Highway 41, built in 1932 and formally opened in 1933 in rustic style, faces east: El Capitan's southwest wall on the left, Bridalveil Fall on the right, Half Dome dead center on the horizon. Visitors approaching from the south see the full valley for the first time through this frame. There is a parking area below, and a trail leads south and uphill toward Inspiration Point. Less than 450 meters away is Artist Point, where artist Thomas Ayres made the first known drawing of Yosemite Valley in 1855.
